Following the stress of major surgery, Martin found himself unable to walk. Through our Benevolent Fund, Lasting Memories were able to not only provide a loan wheelchair but also provide funds to help towards the purchase of a wheelchair and daily transport to and from Addenbrookes for Martin’s radiotherapy.

Martin explains,

“Early in 2021, I was diagnosed with aggressive squamous cell cancer of my tongue, which required the removal of approximately 50% of my tongue, together with all the lymph nodes in my neck, followed up by six weeks of daily radiotherapy at Addenbrookes.

The stress of this very traumatic surgery followed by the radiotherapy resulted in me becoming wheelchair bound, unable to stand or walk.

Mobility and transport became a serious problem which potentially jeopardised my radiotherapy visits.

The unplanned financial implications of getting to and from Addenbrookes became an unwanted additional worry.

Lasting Memories Cancer Trust came to my rescue by providing a loan wheelchair and also a significant contribution towards the cost of a wheelchair and suitable daily transport by Royston and District Community Transport to and from Addenbrookes for the radiotherapy.

I would like to thank all involved at Lasting Memories Cancer Trust in helping to make a very traumatic period in my and my family’s life more manageable.

The picture below is me celebrating the end of the radiotherapy.”
